Blue Nocturne
I painted this piece while listening to classical music, and it felt like a nocturne — a slow, expressive composition unfolding in tone and mood. The layered blues and subtle shifts reminded me of music translated into image: quiet, poetic, and full of resonance.
The panoramic format (9 x 3 in.) allows the eye to travel, much like a melody moving through time. Compressing the vertical space heightens the sense of stillness and depth — a horizon that seems to breathe. Painted on masonite, the matte surface absorbs light in a way that deepens the atmosphere, lending it a weight and quiet presence.
I worked exclusively with a knife, letting texture and rhythm guide me. The movement in the pigment — the interplay between control and spontaneity — mirrors the ebb and flow of sound. Subtle variations of indigo, ultramarine, and flashes of white and gold create moments of light and pause, like a lingering note.
Though it’s abstract, Blue Nocturne isn’t about a place so much as a state of mind — the stillness before a storm, the calm of nightfall, or the reflective hush of memory. It invites a slower gaze, a moment of contemplation.
These oil miniatures form part of an ongoing series exploring the silent dialogues between light, movement, and memory — small works meant for intimate spaces and collectors who find beauty in stillness.
