Impermanence 無常 Mujō 10 in. X 7.5 in.
I painted this piece on acid-free cardboard treated with clear gesso, using only brushes to slow my hand and foster a more contemplative process. The solitary tree at the island's edge stands as a symbol of selfhood — stripped back, fragile, and resilient — serving as a visual meditation on solitude and endurance.
The composition draws inspiration from Japanese ink painting, yet is reinterpreted through oils. Mist, softened mountains, and veiled tones create a shifting space where presence and emptiness coexist. The green land, deliberately muted, contrasts with the stark, calligraphic tree — reminding us that selfhood is both rooted and impermanent.
This painting is part of my ongoing theme Ipseity, which explores the nature of identity as both personal and philosophical. Here, the act of painting itself serves as a reflection: gesture as voice, restraint as expression, silence as meaning.
