I painted Quiet Beacon (a memory from our 50th anniversary cruise from Iceland to Barcelona) as a study of how a single point of light can guide us through vastness.
Using thick layers of oil on masonite, I carved the ripples and drifting currents by knife, echoing a tide that slips under a solitary moon. Night water has always drawn me in — it keeps secrets, softens sound, and gathers memory like a private archive. The deep indigo and sudden cyan speak to that hush, that moment when the world pauses and our sense of self drifts free, anchored only by one quiet beacon overhead.
This original oil painting belongs to my ongoing series of contemporary seascapes and expressionist landscapes — all exploring the theme of Ipseity, or selfhood. I want each piece to hold a moment of reflection, a reminder of how we locate ourselves in darkness by light, memory, and the shifting tide.
This work is floated under glass in a slim black frame; the panel is gently lifted from its backing so the edges and textures remain visible.
