An island rises alone in open water, green against blue, holding its ground against the sea. I build the rock in thick, deliberate strokes of the palette knife until the surface carries real weight, the way stone does, while the water moves around it in restless strokes that never quite disturb its stillness.
Part of my Ataraxia body of work, this piece continues a line of thinking I have returned to for years: the island as a place of peace, somewhere to rest the mind. Not to fill it. At this scale, it suits a collector building an intimate wall grouping, or looking for a quiet, self-contained piece for a smaller space.
